Simplicity 2444: Sewing with Slippery Fabric

I admit that when I first saw Simplicity 2444, I was seriously turned off by the gigantic bow and the cape collar. But as with any other pattern, you have to look past the packaging and check out the elements of the dress. And I'm so glad I did!

From now on, I'm referring to this dress as my Cinderella dress. The dress turned out a bit fancier that I intended, and I felt like I was going to a ball when I put it on. Definitely a good twirling dress.

I decided to use Sew Classic Silky Solid fabric from Joann, just to try to work with something different, but that fabric is slick. (I kept singing that Coolio song "Fantastic Voyage" while I was sewing. "Slide, slide, slippity slide...") I knew as soon as I saw the Joann's associate cut into it. It was my first time making a dress out of something so slippery, so I tried everything to make the dress turn out wearable.

Tips for Slippery Fabric

  • Pin the crap out of it.
I did some serious pinning on the sleeve gathers and while it was annoying to pull them out, they really helped hold everything in place.

  • Use fabric stabilizer.
I only used this when absolutely necessary, like when I saw a lot of puckering that was about to happen.

  • Hand baste.
I hand basted the darts on the bodice and the pleats in the skirt. It helped hold it all together, and nothing slipped when I put it through the sewing machine.

  • Cut fabric with a rotary cutter.
And when you're cutting, lift it every now and then to relieve some of the tension. I noticed the bottom layer kept slipping under just a little, and lifting the rotary cutter helped pull it back into place.
Do you have tips for sewing with slippery fabric? I have another slippery shirt on my to-do list, so I'll need them!
