Back Yard Yarn Bomb: Crochet Mandala

I have a new respect for yarn bombers. These are not easy to hang!

I crochet this mandala/doily in just one Sunday using bulky yarn from my stash. (I almost emptied out an entire drawer of yarn! Woo!) It takes a LOT of yarn to make yarn bombs.

Pattern: Bits of Mandy's Mandala pattern, plus my own additions to the last several rounds to make it larger
I used about 5 full and 2 partial skeins of yarn.

Alex helped me hang the crochet mandala on the chain-link fence in our back yard, and it was a lot harder to hang than I thought. If you ever decide to try yarn bombing, these are some of the things I learned:

  • Use bright colors. I used a darker gray on the outside of my mandala, and you can barely see it from far away.
  • Stretch it out when you hang it. I think we stretched this one too much at the top, and then the bottom had a ruffly effect.
  • Use super-bulky or bulky yarn -- or hold two or more strands of lighter-weight yarn together.
  • Reserve extra yarn for hanging the yarn bomb.
  • Chain-link fences are an ideal place to hang thanks to all the spots you can tie the yarn bomb.
This yarn bomb is about 4.5 feet in diameter. This is only my second official yarn bomb, after yarn bombing our mailbox last year. I'd love to try one of those huge hula hoop doilies next!
